The Guardian portrays a man Diethard Sohn encountered in the Kemang district of Jakarta. The close, frontal composition brings the sitter directly before the viewer. His lowered, searching gaze and firmly closed lips give him a serious yet restrained presence.
Pronounced lines and carefully modelled features speak of experience and lived time. The title refers to his occupation, while his concentrated bearing also suggests attentiveness, responsibility and quiet perseverance.
The bright blue shirt contrasts with the muted tones of the face. Diagonal stairs or railings behind him tighten the pictorial space and enhance the portrait’s monumental effect.
Acrylic on canvas, 55 × 70 cm. The work was acquired for the collection of the Krupp Art Museum at Schloss Elkerhausen.
