Quitte M-02 is more than a self-contained fruit portrait. A fly placed on its surface introduces an unsettling detail and recalls the Renaissance anecdote of a fly painted so convincingly that a master tried to brush it away.
Here the insect is more than a display of illusionistic skill. Its light, fleeting presence disrupts the heavy stillness of the fruit and reminds us that the quince is a perishable body that ripens, changes and eventually decays.
Painted in 2001 in acrylic on a traditional chalk ground over a wooden panel.
